Robotic surgery has spread widely throughout the world in recent years, but especially in the United Kingdom.

From 2013 to 2019, in England, it even grew by 488%! An incredible figure, an indication of the great effectiveness of robotic technology in the medical field.

Furthermore, 82% of all interventions were applied in urology, a very high percentage. In fact, robotic surgery is highly compatible with interventions concerning the prostate, bladder and sexual functions.

But what exactly is robotic surgery?

Why has it developed so much in recent years? What advantages does it bring? Now I’ll explain everything.

What is robotic surgery?

Intuitively it is not difficult to explain what robotic surgery is, it is nothing more than a branch of medicine that makes use of technologically advanced robotic tools to perform surgical procedures.

But how exactly does it work?

Therefore, the surgeon, specially trained and prepared, manages robotic arms via remote control. The operating instruments are connected to them and, moreover, the console provides a high definition 3D vision, allowing the surgeon to carry out the entire operation in an extremely precise and controlled way and to reach areas of the body that are almost unreachable with traditional open surgery.

Still not sure about the reliability of robotic surgery compared to the traditional one? I’ll list some of the many advantages that you would have from undergoing an operation with robotic instruments.

  1. Precision: The robotic system uses precise and highly sensitive tools to perform extremely controlled surgical movements, greatly reducing the risk of complications.

  3. Minimally invasive: the incisions are decidedly smaller, therefore they do not generate significant trauma and prevent major blood loss from occurring.
